Abstract:
The Iquito Language Documentation Project (ILDP) is a collaborative language documentation and revitalization project being carried out jointly by the indigenous Iquito community of San Antonio de Pintuyacu (Loreto, Peroe) and a team graduate students from the University of Texas at Austin.
From June through August of 2002, four UT graduate students spent eight weeks working with the community to launch this innovative long-term project. Their work included training three community members in basic linguistics and documentation skills, and establishing Iquito language classes for the community at large, as well as beginning their own intensive documentation research. These students will speak about their work this summer, focusing on the concrete implementation of the project, its successes and challenges, and the shaping role of the complex social and political environment in which the project is being carried out.
